Waykana company started by mid-2015 when two entrepreneurs: Demetrio Santander and Juan David Gomez met for one common goal to provide a healthy energy ingredient to people who needed to get energized but also take care of health. On a travel to the Amazon, they discover guayusa which is a harmless plant for body health. Demetrio and Juan David feel quite passionate about guayusa as they had past personal experiences related to the plant, but since they experienced the Guayusa Brewing Ceremony with the Kichwas (indigenous community in Ecuador Amazon region) the project raised up. It all began from learning the practice of brewing guayusa, its symbolism, and its culture with the Kichwas people, that little by little the dream became a real project.
Today Waykana harvests and processes guayusa leaf working with the Kichwas; it provides you energy do to the natural caffeine content and offers a clean energy boost in combination with the antioxidants and amino acids it has. Our guayusa is obtained after an exhaustive investigation ended in our distinctive processes which maintain all the characteristics and properties of guayusa leaf ending with the first green guayusa in the market. Today our range of products has expanded to deliver more healthy ingredients and herbs to our customers. We are excited to announce the last products we launched are cinnamon loose leaf and moringa leaves. WAYKANA GUAYUSA TEA
Waykana with more than 4 years of experience in the market of guayusa, has come to understand the behavior and process of the guayusa leaf at the industrial level. The withered conventional guayusa leaf found on the market is not the same as the one produced by our company. Our processes of dehydration, fermentation, drying, result in obtaining a guayusa processed leaf that maintains all its characteristics and properties. Later, when studying the behavior of the processed guayusa leaf when boiling, in infusion, we have discovered the point between sweetness and bitterness which is really our differentiator, our guayusa is naturally sweet and green light natural color of the leaf. In this way, it marks a different experience in the consumer and has been well accepted and welcomed in the world market for its flavor and properties.
Previously not in wide consumption outside of indigenous regions in South America, mostly Ecuador, guayusa offers users a day-long energy boost while not harming their bodies as many other energy products do.
ABOUT GUAYUSA
Guayusa is a plant endemic to the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest. For thousands of years, guayusa has been consumed to awake the mind and to obtain a physical energy boost. Kichwas brew guayusa in the morning to prepare them for their day. Guayusa contains caffeine, antioxidants, theobromine, and amino acids which are good for mental alertness, energy levels and overall health.
ENVIRONMENTAL CARE
Indigenous Kichwa communities we work with grow guayusa in traditional agroforestry plots known as “chakras,” which include numerous native Amazonian crop and plant species. Unlike monoculture plots, chakras act as “jungle farms,” contributing to preserving the biodiversity of the Amazon and protecting the soils from erosion, providing animal and plant habitat, and impeding the intrusion of high-intensity agriculture.

Waykana Guayusa Story
Juan David (right), co-founder, was once told by doctors to stop drinking energy drinks and coffee due to heart risks and digestive problems. Luckily, he learned and found about guayusa infusions after sharing a night of studying with a friend of his during college.
Concurrently, Demetrio Santander (left), who lived in the province of Morona Santiago (Ecuadorian Amazonian Region) during part of his childhood, was in the presence of poverty. At an early age he witnessed the low quality of life indigenous communities were living in, and the limited resources that were available in such a rural and remote region.
By 2015 these two Ecuadorian young entrepreneurs met each other and found in guayusa a product that was aligned with their past experiences. Together they created and founded Waykana, with the intention of providing a healthy source of energy and at the same time working with the indigenous communities contributing to their development, idea which the indigenous Kichwa supported.
